The Binding

The Tyrolia Protector+ Attack 14 GW is a flat, non-system freeski binding that pairs the proven Attack platform with Tyrolia's Full Heel Release technology. DIN 4–14, a 21mm stand height, a 95mm brake, and a matte black finish. It's made in Austria and it's built to handle trail, park, and powder without asking you to compromise on safety.

Most heel pieces only release vertically. The Protector+ heel adds a 180-degree lateral release on top of that, picking up the fall geometries — especially backward-twisting falls — that a standard heel typically misses and that most commonly stress the ACL. Tyrolia cites a University of Innsbruck study showing FHR can reduce ACL strain by more than 50% in those scenarios. That's not a small number.

The trade-off is weight. At roughly 1,290 grams per binding, the Protector+ Attack 14 GW runs about 265 grams heavier than a standard Attack 14 GW. The added mass accommodates the FHR mechanism. If you're building the lightest possible setup, that matters. If you're focused on durability and protection across a full season of hard skiing, it's a reasonable exchange.

What Sets It Apart

The FR PRO3 Toe is Tyrolia's burly freeski toe piece. It carries a metal AFD underneath, which takes repeated step-ins without wearing and keeps the boot sliding cleanly toward release. The AFD height has to be set to your boot's sole during mounting — this is a certified shop setup, not something to skip.

The 21mm stand height and 3mm ramp keep the stance low and neutral. That's lower than bindings like the original Protector series, which ran around 34mm, so you get the FHR safety story without the elevated, stacked feel that turned some skiers off the original. And GripWalk compatibility is built in, so both standard alpine boots and GripWalk-soled boots work here.

Compatibility

The AFD on the FR PRO3 Toe must be adjusted to your specific boot sole height before you ski on it. Bring your boots when you come in, and we'll mount and set everything correctly. If you're not sure whether this brake width works with your skis, bring the skis too — we'll check the fit at any of our three locations.
