The Jacket

The Spyder Copper is one of those jackets that's been in our store for years for a reason. It doesn't try to do too much, it just does the essentials really well. You get a 20K waterproof, 20K breathable EXO SHIELD shell built from 4-way stretch recycled polyester, 100g of Sorona® Black ECO insulation throughout the body, fully seam-taped construction, and a clean, symmetric cut.

The EXO SHIELD fabric is a microporous membrane, so it blocks rain and wet snow while letting vapor out. You're dry from both directions. And the 4-way stretch means you're not fighting the jacket when you reach for a pole or make a big turn. It moves with you. The Sorona® insulation is plant-based and bio-derived, holds its loft well after repeated compression, and doesn't clump if it gets damp the way some fills do. At 100g it's genuinely warm.

The removable, helmet-compatible hood is a big deal for us. Pull it off on a sunny bluebird day, snap it back on when the weather rolls in. The fixed powder skirt with a snap-back feature keeps snow out when you take a tumble or cut through heavy crud. Underarm vents with sealed YKK® Aquaguard zippers let you dump heat on the long traverses without soaking your base layer. Pockets are where you'd expect them: hand pockets, a chest pocket, and a data card pocket, all YKK® zipped. Inside there's a taffeta lining, a reverse-coil interior pocket, a mesh goggle pocket, and a chamois lens wipe. Adjustable cuff tabs and an interior stretch cuff with thumbholes round it out.

What We Like

We like that this jacket doesn't have a lot of complicated stuff that can break or wear out. The seam taping is full, not critical-seam partial. The powder skirt actually connects to your pants. The goggle pocket has mesh so your lenses can breathe. And the EXO SHIELD PFAS-free DWR means the water repellency won't wash out the same way older treatments did. It's the kind of jacket that's still doing its job three seasons in.

The Sorona® insulation upgrade over older PrimaLoft versions of this jacket is worth calling out. Sorona is a bio-based fiber that keeps its warmth even when compressed in a chairlift back. You're not losing loft mid-day the way some cheaper fills do after a season or two of use.

Fit & Sizing

Spyder's Copper runs a standard, slightly athletic fit. It's not a race-room fit, but it's not a boxy lifestyle cut either. Most people fit true to size in a Spyder insulated jacket. If you're between sizes or plan to run a heavier mid-layer underneath, take the larger size. The center-back length on a size M is 28.5 inches, which sits at a good hip-covering length without being a long jacket.
