The Jacket
The Desafio isn't built for groomer laps and lift lines all day. Rossignol made this one for skiers who wander off the cat track and go looking for untouched snow, wind, and weather that doesn't care about your plans. It's a 2-layer shell, cut with a relaxed, modern fit that gives you room to layer up without feeling like you're wearing a tent.
What We Like
We like that Rossignol didn't try to make this jacket do everything on its own. A 2-layer shell means it's not insulated - you pick your own mid-layer and match it to the day Cold morning? Throw on a heavier fleece. Warm and sunny by afternoon? Strip down to a base layer and the shell still keeps wind and wet snow off you. The zip vents let you dump heat on long days or a long traverse without stripping a layer entirely. And the powder skirt keeps snow out when you're skiing deeper stuff instead of packed corduroy.
Tech That Matters
The shell carries a 20K waterproof rating, which puts it solidly in "extremely waterproof" territory. It's also highly breathable, so you're not stewing in your own sweat at the bottom of a bump run. Every seam is fully taped, so there's no gap for moisture to sneak through at the stitching. The DWR finish on the outer face is PFC-free, so water beads off the surface instead of soaking in, and it does that without the older chemistry a lot of shells still use. A pass pocket keeps your lift ticket or resort pass somewhere you can actually reach, and an internal mesh pocket gives you a spot for goggles or a phone that won't fog up or get crushed.
Fit & Sizing
This one runs in a relaxed cut, so it's built to sit comfortably over a mid-layer or two rather than fitting slim against your body. If you're between sizes and plan to layer heavy most days, size up. If you mostly wear a light fleece and want the jacket to sit closer, stick with your usual size. Come try one on at any of our three locations before you commit - fit is personal, and this is a jacket you'll want to get right the first time since it's doing double duty as your storm layer and your everyday shell.
Why Willis
We've been fitting Pittsburgh skiers in gear that actually holds up since 1970, and we know the difference between a jacket that looks good on a hanger and one that holds up on a real storm day. Stop into South Hills, North Hills, or our shop at Seven Springs and we'll help you pick the right size and the right mid-layer to go under it.
