The Binding
The Katana's been one of Rome's go-to bindings for riders who want real adjustability without giving up board feel, and the AW FASE version takes that same platform and swaps the strap-over-strap entry for a rear-entry setup. The highback drops open when you kick out of your binding, snaps shut with one motion of the FastStrap ankle strap, and folds forward when you need to skate to the lift. You're not fumbling with two straps in the cold every time you load a chair.
What Sets It Apart
The AsymWrap chassis is a 3-point baseplate connection that lets the binding flex naturally with your board instead of fighting it. You still get full power transfer when you drive the edge into a groomer, but the plate isn't locking your foot into one rigid position - there's give side to side that a lot of rear-entry bindings don't have. The straps use an auxetic pattern that expands and spreads out under pressure instead of digging in at one spot, so the OmniFlex ankle strap and ProGrip toe strap wrap the boot evenly instead of creating a pressure point on your instep or shin. PivotMount FASE lets you move the strap anchor points to a handful of positions per side, so you can dial in a stiffer, more locked-in response for charging or loosen things up for a looser, surfier ride. That's the real trade-off with this binding - the fast entry is genuinely quick, but you give up a little of the fine-tuned tightening you'd get from cranking down two separate ratchet straps by hand.
Why Willis
We've been fitting boards and bindings out of the South Hills since 1970, and we mount everything we sell in-house at all three of our shops, including our spot right at Seven Springs. If the FASE entry needs an adjustment mid-season, stop in and we'll get it sorted.
