The Jacket
The Patagonia SnowDrifter is a 3-layer hardshell built for people who earn their turns. It's not a resort puffer or an all-purpose winter coat. It's a fully seam-sealed, waterproof, breathable shell for skiers who skin up and ski down, with enough features to hold up inbounds on a serious storm day too. You'll find the whole Patagonia line here at Willi's, and the SnowDrifter sits at the top of what we'd recommend for an active, high-output day on snow.
The shell is Patagonia's H2No® Performance Standard 3-layer construction — 100% recycled polyester stretch fabric bonded to a waterproof membrane with a soft knit backer against your base layer. It weighs 600 g and moves with you. The stretch is real. You can raise your arms, reach for a pole plant, and duck a low branch without the jacket fighting you. The PFAS-free DWR sheds snow and light rain well. In a long, wet, sustained storm, the H2No membrane is doing the heavy lifting, and it's held together by fully sealed seams throughout.
The helmet-compatible hood adjusts two ways and has a laminated visor that keeps blowing snow out of your face. Patagonia's embedded cord-lock system in the hood and hem lets you cinch things down with one hand and gloves on — a small detail that matters a lot at the top of a run. Pit zips dump heat fast on the skin track. The powder gasket cinches tight when the snow's deep and lies flat when you don't need it. Cuffs are low-profile and adjust to go over or under your gloves.
There's a concealed RECCO® reflector in the jacket — standard for a backcountry-oriented shell, and worth knowing about. And it's sewn in a Fair Trade Certified™ factory, which is a Patagonia standard we appreciate.
What we Like
The breathability is what sets this apart from heavier resort shells. On a long skin track, most 3-layer jackets turn into a sauna. The SnowDrifter's stretch fabric and pit zips together genuinely manage heat output. We've had customers come back and tell us it's the first hardshell they've owned where they didn't have to strip it off halfway up.
The pocket layout is thoughtful. Two handwarmers, a chest pocket with a media sleeve and internal cable routing, a bicep pass pocket, and a drop-in interior pocket. That's enough storage for a touring day without turning the jacket into a bulk problem. One honest trade-off: this is a shell, not an insulated jacket. You'll need a good mid-layer under it on cold static days. It's built for moving, and when you're moving, it's warm enough.
Fit & Sizing
Patagonia cuts the SnowDrifter in a regular fit — not boxy, not race-tight. There's room for a mid-layer underneath, which matters on longer days when conditions change. The stretch fabric gives back some of what a closer cut would take away in range of motion. We have S, M, and L in Berry Fig. If you're between sizes and plan to layer heavily, go up. If you're mostly touring or running warm, your normal size will work fine. Stop in at any of our three locations and try it on — this is a jacket worth getting right before you take it into the backcountry.
Why Willi's
We've been fitting skiers and riders in the Pittsburgh area since 1970, and we carry Patagonia because we believe in what they build. Stop in, try the SnowDrifter on with the layers you actually ski in, and we'll tell you honestly if it's the right call. Check out our full range of women's ski and snowboard jackets if you want to compare a few options side by side.
