The Pants

The Patagonia Powder Town Pants are a 2-layer shell pant, no insulation. You dress your own layers underneath and the pants handle the weather on the outside. The shell is H2No® Performance Standard, 5.5-oz 150-denier 100% postconsumer recycled polyester, and the PFAS-free DWR means you're shedding snow without any of the old fluorinated chemistry. The front and lower lining is a light 3.8-oz recycled polyester tricot mesh that slides easily over base layers. The rear panels swap in a warmer 5.3-oz brushed tricot, also with DWR, so you're not sitting on cold fabric all day. It's a smart split-lining setup that a lot of pants skip. Mesh-lined vents at the outer thighs zip open when you're working hard. Snow gaiters seal the cuff around your boot and tough scuff guards protect the inner hem from edge damage. A webbing loop on the rear yoke clips into the powder skirt on any Patagonia snow jacket. Four zippered pockets total: two hand warmers, two cargo pockets at the thigh. There's a concealed RECCO® reflector built into the waistband area. The waist adjusts with elastic tabs, closes with a two-snap fly, and has belt loops if you need them. Inseam is 32".

What We Like

The split lining is our favorite detail. Most shell pants use the same mesh front to back and leave it at that. Patagonia put brushed tricot on the rear panels specifically so the seat and back of the thighs stay warmer when you're sitting on a lift. It matters on a cold morning.

We also like that these are a true layer-management pant. Because there's no built-in insulation, you can wear a light base layer on a mild day or pile on a mid-layer when it drops hard, and the fit works either way without the pants getting balloon-tight. The thigh vents are a real exit for heat, not a decorative zipper, and with four pockets you actually have somewhere to put things.

One honest trade-off: no insulation means no warmth when you're standing around. If you run cold or you're not moving much, you'll want a solid mid-layer underneath, or you may want to look at the insulated version instead. These are a skier's pant, not a standing-in-the-lodge pant.

Fit & Sizing

The fit is regular, articulated through the knees and seat so you can move as normally while skiing. The Powder Town Pants run true to size in length but fit curvy through the hips, with a more fitted waist. If you're between sizes, go up. The 32" inseam works well for most average heights.  The elastic waist tabs give you a couple of inches of adjustment, which helps with fit over base layers.
