Description

The Jacket

The Patagonia Powder Town is a 2-layer H2No® Performance Standard shell. No insulation. That's the first thing to know, and it's the right thing for a lot of skiers. You get waterproof, windproof, breathable protection and you control your warmth with what you wear underneath. On a 22-degree bluebird day, layer up. On a warm March day with wet snow coming down, a midlayer and this shell is plenty.

The H2No® shell is 100% recycled polyester, and the fabric, membrane, and DWR finish are all made without intentionally added PFAS. Patagonia made this in a Fair Trade Certified™ factory, which means the workers who built it got a premium on top of their wages. The jacket weighs 680 g (23.98 oz). Not ultralight, but not heavy either. It's a full-featured ski shell with real hardware.

Pit zips open fast when you're working hard, and the articulated arms give you actual range of motion without the shell riding up. The hood is helmet-compatible with a laminated visor. The collar is tall enough to cover your face when the hood is down, and there's brushed tricot at the chin so it doesn't scratch after hour five. The low-profile powder skirt has a webbing loop at the center back that snaps into any Patagonia Powder Town Pants to keep snow out. A concealed RECCO® reflector is sewn into the jacket.

What We Like

The pocket layout is genuinely well thought out. Two zippered handwarmers with brushed lining, one zippered chest pocket, a zippered pass pocket on the forearm, one internal zippered pocket, and a drop-in pocket inside for goggles or gloves. The hem adjustment routes through the front handwarmer pockets, so you don't have to dig around the hem seam in the cold. Small detail. Makes a real difference.

We also like that the shell liners are bluesign® approved fabric. The torso lining is a 3.8-oz recycled polyester tricot mesh that wicks and slides easily over base layers. Hood and powder skirt lining is a 2.2-oz recycled polyester taffeta with its own DWR finish. You're dry from both directions on those high-contact zones.

The trade-off: this is a shell, not a system jacket. If you run cold, you'll need a real midlayer under it. Skiers who want insulation built in should look at the Insulated Powder Town (style 31201) instead.

Fit & Sizing

Patagonia cuts the Powder Town in a regular women's fit with enough room to layer a midlayer underneath comfortably. It's not oversized, but it's not a snug athletic cut either. If you're between sizes and plan to wear a heavier fleece or a puffy vest underneath, go up. The pit zips, articulated elbows, and gusseted underarms mean the jacket moves with you rather than fighting you when you're getting low on a mogul field or reaching back for a pole plant.

Why Willi's

We've been fitting skiers and riders in Pittsburgh since 1970, and we carry Patagonia outerwear across all three of our locations. Come in and try this on over a real midlayer. Our staff knows the line and can help you decide whether the shell or the insulated version is the right call for how you ski and where you ski most.
