The Jacket

The Patagonia Insulated Storm Shift is the warmest jacket in Patagonia's snow line, and it earns that title with a 2-layer GORE-TEX ePE shell built on 100% recycled polyester. You're getting real waterproof, windproof, breathable protection here. Not a marketing waterproof. GORE-TEX waterproof. The fabric, membrane, and DWR finish are all made without intentionally added PFAS, so the protection is clean too. It's also made in a Fair Trade Certified™ factory, which matters to a lot of our customers and to us.

Inside, a baffled, supersoft lining holds a strategically placed blend of 60-g and 100-g Thermogreen® recycled polyester insulation. The heavier insulation goes where you lose heat fastest, lighter weight where you generate it. That body-mapping keeps you warm without the jacket turning into a sleeping bag. At 940 grams (about 33 oz), it's on the heavier side for an insulated shell, and it skis that way. This is a serious cold-weather jacket, not a layering piece you'll use in October.

What We Like

The pit zips are done right. Coated, waterproof zippers that vent heat fast when you're working hard, then seal back up cleanly. The helmet-compatible hood has a laminated visor that actually holds its shape in wind, and the tall collar covers your neck even when the hood is down. 

The low-profile powder skirt lies completely flat when you don't need it, and when you do, a webbing loop at the center back clips to Patagonia snow pants to keep everything in place. Inside there's a zippered pocket and a drop-in pocket, plus the exterior has two zippered handwarmer pockets, a chest pocket, and a forearm pocket, all with coated waterproof zips. A concealed RECCO® reflector is built in, which adds a layer of safety if you ever get into trouble in the backcountry or on a big mountain day.

Fit & Sizing

Patagonia cuts this in a regular fit, which means room for a midlayer but nothing baggy. The model shown is 6'2" (188cm) in a Medium. The cuffs adjust to sit cleanly over or under gloves, and the hood is sized to go over a helmet. If you're between sizes and planning to run a heavier midlayer underneath on cold days, go up.
