The Piece

The Patagonia Better Sweater® 1/4-Zip is one of those mid layers we keep recommending year after year because it just works. It's 100% recycled polyester fleece with a sweater-knit face and a soft fleece interior — warm enough to wear on its own on a cool fall day, and slim enough to fit cleanly under a shell when things get serious. The Weathered Stone colorway is a clean, earthy neutral that works on the mountain and off it.

It's a midweight piece. If you're looking for something that doubles as your only insulation in deep cold, this isn't it — it's built to layer, not to be a standalone in truly frigid temps. For a cool-weather mid layer or a casual everyday pullover, though, it's hard to beat.

What we Like

The raglan sleeve construction is the detail we point out first. No shoulder seam means you're not fighting the fabric when you swing a pack on or reach across. The flat-seam construction keeps bulk down and chafe out of the equation. The quarter-zip with a kissing-welt zipper garage means you can vent heat on the go without the zipper rubbing your chin — a small thing that matters on longer days out.

The zippered left-chest pocket is sized for a phone or a lift ticket wallet. And the cuffs and hem use a shape-holding micropolyester trim so they don't stretch out and go baggy on you after a season of heavy use. It's made in a Fair Trade Certified™ factory, dyed with a low-impact process. We carry men's mid layers across a few brands, and the Better Sweater earns its spot on our floor every season.
