The Jacket

This is a warm one. The Alpha 4.0 is Helly Hansen's insulated resort jacket for guys who get cold standing in the lift line and don't want to solve that problem with three extra layers. The shell is a 2-layer waterproof, windproof fabric with mechanical stretch built in, so it bends with you. Underneath, body-mapped insulation adds real warmth where you actually lose heat, not just wherever the pattern happened to land.

What We Like

The underarm venting is the detail we point out first. The chest pocket is a nice touch too - it's built to keep your phone battery from dying in single-digit temps. The hood comes off when you don't need it, goes back on and fits over a helmet when you do, and the neon brim actually helps your buddies spot you in a whiteout. Thumbhole cuffs with wrist gaiters keep snow out and the snap-up powder skirt does its job on deep days without adding bulk.

HELLY TECH Professional is the waterproof, breathable, windproof shell fabric with 4-way mechanical stretch woven in - it keeps weather out and still moves with your body. Primaloft® Ocean bound 80g is the insulation, a lightweight recycled synthetic placed with body-mapping so warmth sits where you need it and not where you don't. The H2Flow system is mechanical venting under the arms for quick heat dump on a hard-charging run or a warm afternoon. LIFE POCKET+ uses PrimaLoft Aerogel to insulate a dedicated chest pocket and slow down cold-weather battery drain on your phone. RECCO Advanced Rescue is a built-in reflector that ski patrol and rescue teams can pick up with their detectors if things go sideways on the mountain. The jacket is a certified bluesign product and uses Ocean Bound recycled materials in its construction.

Fit & Sizing

We carry this one in M, L, and XL. It's cut as a standard resort fit - room enough for a midweight base layer and maybe a light fleece underneath on the coldest days, without feeling bulky. If you run warm or layer light, size down; if you want room to layer heavy on the coldest mornings, size up. Bring your usual ski layers in and try it on at any of our three locations - fit is easier to judge in person than off a chart.
