The Pants
The 686 Smarty 3-in-1 Cargo is really three pants stuffed into one shell. Zip the fleece liner in for cold, deep-winter days. Pull it out and wear the shell alone once spring corn snow shows up. Or just wear the liner around the lodge like a sweatpant.
The shell itself runs infiDRY 20K waterproofing, so it holds up through wet spring snow, slush, and the kind of storm day where everyone else is soaked by lunch. A reinforced kick panel and 500D Horseshoe Hem take the abuse from boot buckles and edges without wearing through early. The boot gaiter has a lace hook built in and works with a BOA compatible boot system, so it stays put instead of riding up. Air-Flo vents let you dump heat on the hike back up without stripping a layer off.
What We Like
This pant earns its keep by doing three jobs instead of one. Skiers who run cold love zipping the liner in. Riders who overheat on bluebird days pull the liner and wear the shell solo. The trade-off is weight - with the liner in, this is a heavier, warmer pant than a straight shell, so it's not the one you want on a warm spring afternoon when you're layering light. Pack it for the cold snap and the slush day both, and you'll use it either way.
Fit & Sizing
The Smarty Cargo runs true to size through the hip and thigh with room to move through the knee, which matters once the liner's zipped in and you're adding bulk underneath. If you're between sizes and plan to wear the liner most of the season, size up so nothing feels tight through the seat.
Why Willis
We've fitted South Hills, North Hills, and Seven Springs families in 686 gear for years, and the Smarty line is one we recommend a lot because it actually gets worn three different ways instead of sitting in a drawer. Stop into any of our three locations and we'll help you land the right size.
