The Jacket
The Hydra is 686's do-everything jacket, and it's earned that spot the hard way - this thing sells well every season because it just works. It's a mid-weight jacket built for guys who want one jacket that handles a groomer day, a storm day, and everything in between without fussing over layering systems.
What We Like
The body-mapped insulation is the reason we keep recommending this jacket. 686 puts warmth where you actually lose heat - core, shoulders, upper back - and backs off insulation in spots where you run hot, like under the arms. That means you're not sweating through your base layer on a warmer afternoon or shivering on the chairlift when the wind picks up. The asymmetrical zipper sits off to the side instead of straight up your chin, so it doesn't dig in when you zip all the way up. Small detail, but if you've ever had a zipper pull chew at your neck on a windy day, you'll notice the difference immediately.
Tech That Matters
The shell is rated at 20,000mm waterproofing, which puts it well past what you need for wet snow, slush, or a slow chairlift in a light rain. Seams are taped throughout so water doesn't sneak in through the stitching, and the insulation itself is made from recycled material - about 85% single-use plastic - that keeps its loft and recovers well after getting packed down in a bag or squished under a pack. Vents let fresh air in and pull moisture out when you're working hard, and there's a separate vent system built to cut down on goggle fog when you're bent over buckling boots or hiking a sidecountry line. The hood is cut to fit over a helmet, so you're not choosing between hood-up warmth and helmet compatibility.
Fit & Sizing
The Hydra runs true to size and fits close enough to layer a mid-weight fleece underneath without feeling bulky. If you tend to run warm or layer light, stick with your normal size. If you're someone who piles on a heavier mid-layer for cold days, size up one. It's built for guys who want a jacket that works from first chair to last, not a jacket cut for racing or built loose enough for a full puffy underneath.
Why Willis
We've been fitting Pittsburgh skiers and riders since 1970, and jackets like the Hydra are exactly what we hand-pick for the floor - reliable gear that doesn't need an instruction manual. Stop into any of our three locations and we'll help you dial in size and layering before you head out.
