Description
The Jacket
The 686 Geo Insulated jacket isn't trying to blend into a lift line full of solid-color shells. The geometric print stands out, and it does it without pushing the price into flagship territory. This is a mid-weight insulated jacket built for full days on the hill — not a layering shell, not a lightweight spring piece. If you want something that looks different at the base lodge and still keeps the weather out, this is a solid place to land.
What We Like
686 didn't cut corners to hit this price. You still get real waterproof-breathable fabric, taped seams, and an adjustable powder skirt — features that usually show up on jackets running quite a bit more. The Hoodlink system - roll the hood down, cinch the bungee, and it stays bundled instead of flopping loose in your bag. The inner audio pocket and the velcro pass pocket with a key clip are the kind of pockets you don't notice until you need them, and then you wonder how you skied without them.
Tech That Matters
The shell runs on 686's own infiDRY fabric, which handles waterproofing and breathability together — wet snow and slush stay out while sweat vapor can still get out. Underneath, infiLOFT insulation traps heat but lets air move through the fill, so it keeps you warm without the stiff, sealed-in feel some insulated jackets have. Every seam is taped, which matters on the wet, sloppy days when stitch holes are usually where water sneaks in. The outer face gets a PFAS-free DWR finish, so it sheds water without the "forever chemicals" older coatings rely on. The body fabric itself is a recycled poly with 4-way stretch — it dries fast and moves with you, whether you're hiking the boot pack or just working your way back to the lift.
An Air-Flo chest vent dumps heat fast when you're working hard, and the powder skirt cinches down to seal out snow on a deep day. Inside you've got an audio pocket for your phone, a velcro pass pocket with a key clip so your pass is always where you can reach it, and Lycra wrist gaiters that keep snow from creeping up your sleeve after a fall.
Fit & Sizing
This one runs true to size and leaves room to layer a midweight fleece or thin puffy underneath without pulling tight through the shoulders. Sizes go S through XXL. If most of your days are groomer laps and you run warm, stick with your regular size. If you're layering heavy for the coldest days or want extra room to move in the terrain, go up one.
Why Willis
We've been fitting Pittsburgh riders in outerwear since 1970, and we know the difference between a jacket that photographs well online and one that holds up through a full season of chairlifts, powder days, and everything in between. Stop into any of our three locations and we'll help you get the size and layering right before you head out. We stand behind the 686 gear we sell because we've seen it hold up season after season.
