The Snowboard
The Women's Never Summer Proto Type 3 is a true twin all-mountain freestyle board built to go everywhere and do almost everything. It's the follow-up to the Proto Type Two — one of Never Summer's most beloved shapes — and it arrives with updated construction and Never Summer's newest carbon technology. it's a serious board for a rider who's done messing around with beginner gear and wants something that'll keep up with her for a few seasons.
The profile is Never Summer's Triple Camber Hybrid — three cambered zones (under and outside the feet) separated by two subtle rocker sections between the bindings and at tip and tail. The camber gives you pop and edge hold when you're driving the board hard. The rocker in the middle keeps the nose from hooking on variable snow and makes the board friendlier when you're riding switch or learning new tricks. It's not a full-camber board, so it's a touch more forgiving than that. But it's not a rocker board either — there's real snap here when you load an edge or pop off a lip.
The 6/10 flex is medium. It's not soft enough to feel washy at speed, and it's not so stiff that you have to muscle it through a turn. For most intermediate-to-advanced women who weigh somewhere in the 120–170 lb range, that flex will feel just about right across a full day of mixed terrain. Riders on the lighter end of that range may find it a hair firm; riders over 160 lbs or so will appreciate the stability it brings on faster groomer runs.
What Sets It Apart
The biggest piece of new tech on the Proto Type 3 is the Precision Stitched Carbon Matrix — Never Summer's newest approach to putting carbon fiber in a board. Instead of laying carbon sheets, they stitch fiber into specific zones around the nose, tail, and between the bindings to match where the board actually flexes and responds. The result is better torsional stiffness and energy transfer without adding dead weight. You feel it most when you're linking turns on firm snow or popping off a side hit — the board just snaps back faster than boards built without it. The pattern on this version is the T3 Twin Carbon Mapping, which keeps the layout symmetrical for the true twin shape.
Edge hold comes from Never Summer's R.I.P. Edge-Hold Technology, which uses the Vario Power Grip Sidecut — multiple radii along the edge instead of a single radius. The different contact zones give you extra bite when the board flexes and loads an edge, then let the board track clean and straight when you're transitioning. On hardpack, it holds a carve noticeably better than a basic single-radius sidecut board would.
The core is the AllPop Wood Core — full-length Poplar stringers that are light, impact-resistant, and naturally damp. Poplar smooths out chatter without making the board feel dead. The base is Durasurf XT Sintered 5501, which absorbs wax well and stays fast over a season of real use. And the Blower Stance insert layout gives you a wider-than-usual range of stance widths and angles to dial in your setup.
One honest trade-off: this is a freestyle-leaning twin, not a freeride board. It'll handle groomer speed and handle soft snow days just fine, but riders who primarily charge steep groomers fast or want a directional feel for deep powder days should look at the Proto T3 FR instead.
