The Binding
The Atomic X 16 VAR sits on the higher end of Atomic's X platform, and the name tells you a lot before you even pick it up. That "16" points to a top-end release range built for skiers who load up their skis hard through a turn and don't want the binding letting go when they don't want it to. VAR is Atomic's adjustable-brake setup, meaning one binding covers a range of ski waist widths instead of needing a separate brake part for every ski in your quiver.
What Sets It Apart
This isn't a binding for someone easing into the sport. The release range is set up for advanced and expert skiers - people who ski fast, ski aggressively, and need a binding that holds through chatter and hard snow without popping early. If you're still working on parallel turns or you ski mostly greens and easy blues, a lower-DIN binding will serve you better and release more predictably at your speed.
The VAR brake is the real convenience play here. Buy the binding once, and it adjusts to fit a wider window of ski widths, so it travels with you if you change skis down the road instead of forcing a whole new binding purchase. The trade-off: this is a burlier binding built for alpine performance, not a lightweight setup, so if you're chasing every gram for long approaches, this isn't the binding doing that job for you.
Compatibility
We're not going to guess at boot sole compatibility or throw out a DIN range here - that's exactly the kind of thing that needs to be checked in person, not read off a spec sheet. Bring your boots and the skis you want mounted into any of our three locations and we'll check sole length, boot sole type, and get your DIN set to your height, weight, and ability level before anything gets drilled. A binding is only as good as the mount underneath it, and we'd rather spend ten extra minutes getting it right than have you find out it's wrong on the hill.
Why Willis
We've been mounting bindings in Pittsburgh since 1970, and we still do every binding mount by hand and check it against your boots before you leave the shop. Stop into our South Hills, North Hills, or Seven Springs location and our techs will walk you through the setup - no guessing, no shortcuts.
