The Ski
The Maverick 78 is Atomic's frontside ski for guys who want to point downhill and carve turn after turn on groomed runs. A 78mm waist keeps this ski locked onto firm snow, and full camber underfoot means the edges grab the second you tip it over. Atomic built it around a Densolite foam core - light underfoot and easy to flex into a turn without a lot of muscle from the skier. A slight tip rocker helps it turn in fast without feeling nervous at speed. It comes with Atomic M10 GW bindings already included, so you're not shopping for a binding separately. Take a look through our mens skis if you want to see how it stacks up against Atomic's wider models.
Who It's For
This is a groomer ski, plain and simple. The 78mm waist and full camber profile reward a skier who likes carving clean arcs down a blue or black run rather than hunting for soft snow off to the side. Intermediate skiers stepping up from a beginner package ski will feel how much better this one holds an edge on firm snow. Stronger skiers who spend most of their day on groomed terrain will like how quick it turns without needing a stiff, unforgiving race ski underfoot. One honest limitation - at 78mm underfoot, this ski gets overwhelmed once you're more than a few inches into fresh snow, so if powder days are the priority, you'll want something wider.
Tech That Matters
Full camber with a slight tip rocker gives you edge grip through the whole arc of the turn, and the tip still releases easy when you want to skid or slide instead of carve. The Densolite core is a foam core - it soaks up chatter on hardpack and keeps the ski from feeling like a plank underfoot. Turn radius runs from 11m at the shortest length up to 15m at the longer sizes, so shorter pairs turn quicker and tighter, longer pairs hold a bigger arc at speed. Atomic includes their M10 GW binding on this model, mounted and ready to go.
Sizing
We stock the Maverick 78 in 146, 154, 162, and 170cm. If you're newer to carving on firm snow and still building confidence, size down closer to chin height for an easier ski to manage. Intermediate skiers looking for an everyday groomer length generally want it landing up around the nose. Advanced skiers who like to move fast and hold a long edge can size up toward lip-to-brow height. Not sure which length is right for you? Bring your boots into any of our three locations and we'll help you dial it in.
Why Willis
We've been mounting skis and fitting boots since 1970, and getting the binding set correctly matters as much as picking the right length. Stop into any of our three locations and we'll check your boot sole, set your DIN, and have this pair ready to ski before you leave the shop.
