The Jacket
The Edge HIPE® 3L AOP Shell is Peak Performance's most relaxed-fit freeride ski shell. It's a pure shell, no insulation, built around their HIPE®ACE three-layer membrane and a loose, surfy cut that fits comfortably over a full layer system. The Beam Fade all-over print is the AOP version of the Edge line, and it looks sharp without screaming for attention. If you want to see what else Peak Performance carries, browse our Peak Performance collection.
The HIPE®ACE fabric posts 20,000mm waterproofness and 20,000 g/m²/24h breathability. Every seam is fully taped, so you're dry from both directions. It doesn't breathe through pores the way some cheaper membranes do — it's a bonded three-layer construction, so the inner face stays smooth against a mid layer and holds up to season after season of hard use. No intentionally added PFAS, either, which matters more every year as DWR chemistry evolves.
Ski-specific details are well thought out. There's a RECCO® Rescue System reflector built in, a ski-pass pocket, a mesh phone pocket with a media exit cable port, and arm ventilation zips for when you're working hard on a long run in mild weather. The hood adjusts two ways and fits over a helmet. Articulated sleeves mean you can reach a pole plant without pulling the hem up.
One honest trade-off: this is a shell, not an insulated jacket. On the coldest days you're counting on your mid layer to do the warmth work. That's not a limitation if you layer — it's a feature. A shell this breathable vents far better than an insulated jacket when you're skiing hard, and you can tune warmth by swapping layers underneath.
What We Like
We like the HIPE®ACE construction here. At this category, a lot of shells are still running 2-layer or 2.5L builds where the membrane hangs loose against your fleece. The bonded three-layer construction on the Edge means there's no lining to bunch up, it dries faster, and it packs a little cleaner. The relaxed fit is genuinely relaxed — it moves well over a beefy mid layer and you won't feel pinched reaching forward in the bumps.
The RECCO reflector is worth calling out. It adds nothing to the jacket's day-to-day feel but it's one of those things you want on a freeride-oriented shell. And the arm vents are real vents, not token zips, so you can dump heat on a bluebird spring lap without taking the jacket off.
Fit & Sizing
The Edge runs in a relaxed, freeride cut. It's made to layer over a base layer and a mid layer, with room to spare. Peak Performance describes it as hip length with a dropped hem. If you're between sizes, size down for a cleaner fit over just a base layer, or stay true to size if you run a heavier fleece or a puffer underneath.
Why Willi's
We've been fitting skiers in Pittsburgh since 1970, and we carry Peak Performance because it performs the way they say it will. Stop into any of our three locations and try the Edge on over a real mid layer — that's the only way to know the fit is right for how you actually ski.
