The Ski
The M-Cross 88 Open is Dynastar's answer to a guy who skis mostly groomers but doesn't want to feel locked into a straight line the second he drifts off the corduroy. An 88mm waist puts it right in that frontside zone - narrow enough to snap edge to edge on a packed run, wide enough that you're not helpless if you clip through a few inches of chopped-up snow at the edge of the trail. It's a men's ski, built for that day-in-day-out kind of skiing.
Who It's For
This ski is built for advanced to expert skiers who want a modern ski that doesn't sacrifice performance the moment the trail ends. It's especially well-suited to skiers who spend most of their days on-trail but want the confidence to handle bumps, trees, and softer snow without swapping to a dedicated freeride ski. Strong intermediates pushing toward more advanced technique will also find this ski to be tough at slower speeds, and directional, forward-driving skiers will get along with this ski best — those wanting a looser, more pivoty feel in tight terrain may find it a bit composed for their style.
Tech That Matters
The build starts with Dynastar's Hybrid Core 2.0, a poplar wood core layered in three directions and combined with polyurethane along the edges — the multi-directional wood grain resists compression, reacts quickly when flexed, and resists twisting, giving you a core that's light but still feels solid underfoot. Layered into that core is a titanal insert shaped like an "H" and concentrated under the foot, which is what gives this ski noticeably more edge hold and stability in a carve than you'd expect.
Directional rocker in the tip and tail — paired with camber that runs underfoot — helps the ski rise up and glide over crud or powder while still gripping hard when you're back on hardpack. Sandwich-style sidewalls run the full length of the ski for direct, precise energy transfer to the edge, and a sintered base soaks in wax well for a fast, low-maintenance glide in a range of snow temperatures.
Sizing
For a ski like this, length comes down to how you actually ski, not just your height. Stand next to it - an advanced skier wants the ski hitting around brow height, while an intermediate skier does better with it landing a touch shorter, closer to chin-to-nose. If you're skiing fast and aggressive, take the longer of two sizes you're stuck between. If you're still working on confidence at speed, go shorter and let the ski turn easier under you.
Why Willis
We've been fitting skiers in the South Hills since 1970, and that's not changing with a new model year. Come into any of our three locations - South Hills, North Hills, or our shop at Seven Springs - and we'll get your boots, bindings, and this ski matched up right before you ever click in. Fifty-plus years of doing this means we know when a ski fits and when it doesn't, and we'll tell you straight either way.
