Overview

Some jackets try to do too much — built-in heating systems, 47 pockets, enough zippers to confuse airport security. The Armada Gansett strips it back. Clean lines, tough construction, enough warmth and weather protection to handle a full day at Seven Springs without thinking twice about what you're wearing. That's the point. When your jacket disappears into the background and you're just out there skiing, it did its job.

We've been fitting Pittsburgh-area skiers in mens ski and snowboard apparel for over 50 years, and honestly, this kind of jacket — no-nonsense insulated shell with real weather protection and a look that holds up off the hill too — is exactly what most guys actually need. Not the most expensive thing on the wall. Not the most technical. Just genuinely good.

What We Like

First thing you notice when you pick up the Gansett is the fit. Armada cut this one with a relaxed silhouette that reads clean and modern without being so baggy you look like you borrowed your dad's old powder suit. It sits right. Hood looks intentional, not like an afterthought.

The 40g insulation hits a sweet spot we don't always see at this price range. It's not a heavyweight expedition parka — and it's not trying to be. But on a 20-degree bluebird day at Hidden Valley, or grinding through one of those grey Pennsylvania February afternoons where it just refuses to warm up, you're comfortable. Layer a midlayer underneath when it gets really ugly and you're covered for most of what this region throws at you.

Pockets are well thought out. Media pocket, lift pass access, interior stash pocket for the stuff you don't want rattling around in your cargo pants. Nothing revolutionary, but it all works the way it should and ends up in the right place when you reach for it.

But here's the honest part: if you're regularly skiing deep days in the backcountry, chasing big mountain lines, or dropping into terrain where you're really pushing your exposure — there are more technical options out there with higher waterproof ratings and more advanced membrane systems. The Gansett is built for the skier who wants a sharp, capable jacket for resort skiing and occasional adventure, not a hardcore technical athlete who needs gear rated for an expedition.

Tech That Matters

The shell is a 2-layer fabric construction with 10K/10K waterproof/breathability ratings. For Pennsylvania conditions — which tend to run more toward wet, heavy snow and icy groomer days than light Rocky Mountain powder — 10K/10K is solid. It handles moderate precipitation and wind without soaking through, and it breathes well enough on high-output laps that you're not cooking inside it.

Seam construction keeps moisture out at the stress points. The adjustable hood cinches down over a helmet without bunching up awkwardly — we've checked. Cuffs and hem are adjustable too, so you can actually seal the jacket against wind when the temps drop and the ridge gets exposed. Small detail. Matters a lot when you're riding a chairlift at Seven Springs with a 25 mph gust coming across the ridge.

Interior and exterior pockets are well placed for real use — not just designed to look good in a product photo. The lift pass window is on the left sleeve, exactly where you want it.

Fit & Sizing

Armada fits true to size with a relaxed, slightly boxy cut — not oversized, but there's room to move and room for a midlayer. If you're between sizes and tend to layer heavy, go up. If you run slim and prefer a cleaner fit, stay true. The hem length sits at the hip, which works well for both skiing and wearing around the lodge without looking like you're still in full kit.

Why Willis

We've been outfitting Pittsburgh skiers since 1970, and we actually know the mountains you're skiing — Seven Springs, Hidden Valley, the occasional road trip out west. Our staff skis and rides, so when we say a jacket works, it's not because we read the spec sheet. Stop in, try the Gansett on, and if the fit's not right we'll find you something that is.
