The Pants

The 686 SMARTY® 3-in-1 Cargo Pant is one of those products we keep reordering because customers come back for it. One purchase gets you two actual pants: a 20K waterproof shell and a removable fleece jogger that zips out and works on its own. Wear the shell alone on warmer days, add the fleece liner when it's cold, or pull the liner off after riding and wear it around the lodge. Three configurations, no extra purchase.

The shell runs infiDRY® 20K/20K fabric, which means 20,000mm waterproofing and 20,000g breathability. Seams are fully taped with Bemis® tape. The DWR is PFAS-free. 686 also reinforced the side seams with a wrapped construction and used Core Ultra Thread throughout, so the pants hold up to daily wear and tear.

Venting is through Air-Flo™ mesh-lined inner leg vents. The waist adjusts externally, there's a tricot inner waistband so the shell sits comfortably against base layers, and Double Duty Waist Snaps keep everything where you put it. The boot gaiter is BOA® compatible, includes a boot lace hook, and the 500D Horseshoe Hem™ takes the abuse at the bottom of the leg where pants usually blow out first.

Pockets: belt loop stash pocket, hidden seam stash pocket, front hand pockets with an inner key clip, cargo pockets on the thigh, and a lift ticket eyelet. The Pant Jacket Connect™ system lets these snap to compatible 686 jackets to block out snow at the waist.

The fleece liner is a stretch poly fleece jogger with its own drawstring waist, so it's wearable off the mountain. That said, it's midlayer fleece, not insulation. On truly cold days some riders want a little more warmth than the liner alone provides under the shell.

What We Like

We carry a lot of pants and we keep recommending this one because the math is hard to argue with: two functional pieces for the price of one. The men's ski and snowboard pants category is crowded, and a lot of shells in this price range cut corners on seam taping or give you a thin, scratchy liner you'll never actually wear. The Bemis® fully taped seams and the 20K/20K rating on the shell are legitimately above average for the price. The cargo pocket layout is clean without being bulky. And the fleece jogger is soft enough that people actually wear it — on days when you just want to ski and go, you can grab one thing and have covered all your bases.
