The Snowboard
The Rossignol Scan is a true twin freestyle board built from the ground up for kids who are just figuring out what a heel edge is. It's one of the softest boards Rossignol makes — a 1 out of 10 on their flex scale — and it's shaped that way on purpose. Little riders don't need a stiff board fighting them on every turn. They need something that tips when they tip, spins when they spin, and doesn't send them into the fence when they catch a toe edge.
Who It's For
This one's for beginner to intermediate riders, ages roughly 3 to 10, depending on the size. Kids who are on the hill for their first or second season, or who've been in lessons and are ready to step off rental gear onto something that actually fits how they ride. The centered twin shape means it works going both directions, so a kid who's starting to mess around switch or in the park isn't punished by the board. That said — the Scan is a learning board, not a progression-to-expert board. A rider who's already linking turns confidently and wants more speed or edge hold will outgrow it. At that point you're probably looking at something with more camber and a stiffer flex. But for the target audience, this is exactly right.
We also offer the Junior Buyback Program for kids 6–14 — worth looking into if your child is still growing fast. Kids tend to jump a board size every season or two, and buying new every year adds up.
Tech That Matters
AmpTek Auto-Turn: Rossignol's name for the 70/30 rocker-to-camber blend. The rocker in the tip and tail keeps the board floating and forgiving. The camber between the feet adds pop and keeps the board responsive. For a beginner, this is the profile you want — the board initiates turns on its own without requiring a lot of input.
Twin Freestyle Shape: Symmetrical nose and tail, centered stance. Stiff underfoot for pop, softer at the waist so kids can flex and press without a ton of strength. The deep progressive sidecut turns on a dime at the speeds kids actually ride at, which keeps the whole experience feeling manageable rather than scary.
Sustainably Sourced Wood Core: Rossignol's Wood 3510 core comes from FSC-certified forests. It's light, lively, and gives the board real feel underfoot — something a pure foam or composite construction can't match at this size.
Extruded 4400 Base: Extruded bases hold wax well enough and are forgiving when it comes to base repairs. For a kid's first board, that's a feature. They're going to scrape stuff.
Blunted Tips: Slightly blunted nose and tail reduce the chance of catching at slow speeds. Less intimidating for new riders and more forgiving on flat terrain.
Why Willi's
Willi's has been in Pittsburgh since 1970, and junior snowboard setup is something we do every day during the season. Stop into any of our three locations and we'll make sure the board, the boots, and the bindings all work together before your kid ever sees snow. We also mount and tune in-house, so you're leaving with something ready to ride.
