When Greg Klein visited ski factories across Europe, he didn't just bring back product knowledge — he brought back the same standard of equipment care that World Cup race teams demand. That's why Willi's invested in Montana tuning machines, the same technology used in European World Cup service rooms and at the top race programs in the country.
Montana's precision stone grinding and infrared waxing systems don't just tune a ski — they transform it. The right base structure for East Coast conditions (hard pack, ice, variable Pittsburgh-area snow) makes a real, measurable difference in how your skis perform from your first run to your last. This isn't gear maintenance. It's gear optimization.

Montana Infrared Wax Service
Also available as an add-on to Basic Hot Wax for $15.
Infrared waxing has been used in World Cup race rooms across Europe for years — and now it's available at Willi's. Our Montana Infrared Race Waxer uses light energy to gently heat the ski or snowboard base from the inside out, opening the base material for deeper wax absorption. The result is longer-lasting glide, smoother performance, and none of the base damage risk that can come from a traditional hot iron.

Tuning FAQs
Common questions from Pittsburgh-area skiers and snowboarders about our tuning services.
How often should I get my skis or snowboard tuned?
For recreational skiers skiing 10–20 days per season, a full tune once or twice a season is typical. Frequent skiers or those skiing on hard Pennsylvania and Mid-Atlantic snow may benefit from edge sharpening every 5–10 ski days. A hot wax every few days keeps your base gliding smoothly and protects the base material from drying out.
What is Montana stone grinding and why does it matter?
Stone grinding uses a precision-controlled rotating stone to resurface your ski or snowboard base, removing damage and creating a fresh, flat surface with a custom structure (microscopic texture) optimized for your local snow conditions. Montana machines are among the most advanced in the industry, used in World Cup race service rooms. The structure pattern affects how water and snow interact with your base — the right structure for East Coast conditions makes a measurable difference in speed and glide.
What is the difference between a Full Tune and a Performance Tune?
The Full Tune ($60) covers all the essentials: stone grinding with a structured finish, base and side edge work, and a hot wax — everything a recreational skier needs. The Performance Tune ($90) takes it further with a race-quality edge finish, fully custom stone grind structure, and Montana infrared waxing for deeper base penetration and longer-lasting glide. It's ideal for advanced skiers, racers, and anyone who wants the absolute best out of their equipment.
What is Montana Infrared Waxing and is it worth it?
Infrared waxing uses light energy to heat the ski or snowboard base from the inside out, opening the base material for deeper wax absorption. This delivers longer-lasting glide and smoother performance without the risk of base damage that can come from a traditional hot iron. This technology has been standard in World Cup race rooms in Europe for years. It's especially worth it before a ski trip or at the start of the season — the deeper wax penetration means the treatment lasts significantly longer.
Where can I get my skis tuned near Pittsburgh, PA?
Willi's Ski and Board offers professional ski and snowboard tuning at three locations: our South Hills shop at 3738 Library Rd, Castle Shannon, PA; our North Hills shop at 1101 Perry Highway, Pittsburgh, PA; and at Seven Springs Mountain Resort. All three locations use Montana stone grinding equipment for precision, race-quality results.
How long does a ski tune take at Willi's?
Turnaround times vary by season and volume. During peak ski season (December–February), we recommend dropping off your gear a day or two in advance. Bringing your skis in midweek typically gets the fastest service. Call or stop in to get a current estimate for your local Willi's location.
