Snowboard Glossary

Afterbody:           The portion of the ski or snowboard from the back of the bindings to the tail

Air:                       Going airborne for pretty much any reason – hopefully it is intentional

Backcountry:      Terrain that is not within the boundary line of a recognized and open resort.

Bonk:                 To hit, slide on, balance on or otherwise utilize terrain park equipment, half pipe or jump

Box:                   A raised

Busting:              The act of performing a trick; the act of NOT performing a trick resulting in an injury significant enough to earn bragging rights

Buttering:            Spinning either 180 or 360 degrees with your weight entirely on the tip or tail of the ski/snow board.  This move is often used to gain small amounts of air in order to pop up onto a rail, tabletop or jump.  It is also used by adolescent boys trying to prove that they are jibbers or to impress girls before getting in line for the lift.  Please note that this is different than an ollie  or a nollie only in the fact that it is done with a spin – it is more of a technique then a trick.

Cab:                   The act of starting a trick tail first.

Claim:                 The act of indicating how well one performed a trick with words or hand gestures (see OWN)

De-Tune:            To dull the edges of a ski or snowboard usually done on just the front and back 5-10 cm to keep from catching an edge

Drop:                 To descend into a half pipe, terrain park or jump; to let go of something, (eg. Money, bladder contense, your gear, conversation or topic)

Dropping            (see DROP) Originally a safety term used to indicate who was going next off of a jump or into the half pipe or terrain park it is now used in many arenas to ask or indicate who’s turn it is. (eg. I’m dropping in, I’m dropping out, I’m dropping next, I’m dropping dough)

Forebody:          The portion of the ski or snowboard from the front of the binding to the tip

Jib:                     Multi functional word (see DUDE); typically used to indicate a piece of or the use of terrain park equipment but may also be used as a replacement for the English words give, pass and tease.

Jibber:                Someone who jibs

Kicker:               Type of a jump that best suits inverted moves

Lift:                    Type of a jump that helps the jumper gain both air and distance

Midbody:           The portion of a ski or snowboard between the front edge of the bindings to the rear edge fo the bindings

Nollie:                A trick where ones weight is entirely on the after body  then released in a way that pops one up into the air several inches

Ollie:                  A trick where ones weight is entirely on the fore body then released in a way that pops one up into the air several inches

Own:                  The right to brag about ones skill in trick by performing it extremely well (see CLAIM)

Park:                  Short for Terrain Park; portion of a resort dedicated to doing jumps and tricks, usually equipped with lifts, kickers, table tops, boxes and rails

Pipe:                   Short for Half Pipe; a man made valley like feature with steep sides that enable a rider to get air to perform multiple tricks

Rail:

Shred:                To ski or snowboard really hard, really fast or really well

Switch:               To turn around and ride backwards; please note that this used to be called fakie but fakie is now totally old school and you will be showing your age if you use it – also keep in mind that to enter into a trick riding switch is called CAB so keep your terms straight
